Climate Emergency Response Plan consultation

Consultation on new Climate Emergency Response Plan launched

The Council is asking people in the borough to share their views on the actions the Council has set out to tackle the Climate Emergency. A draft of the Council’s Climate Emergency Response Plan for 2025 – 2030 has been prepared following an initial co-production exercise earlier this year. The plan will be used as a guide to support west Cheshire to achieve its target to reach net zero by 2045. You can view the draft plan and complete the consultation on the Council's website before 12 February 2025. Paper copies are available on request.

Council progresses plans for electric vehicle infrastructure

A scheme to support residents that lack off-street charging capability and provides funding to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles, plus the infrastructure required has progressed following approval from the Department of Transport. The scheme will see at least 800 public electric vehicle (EV) charging points installed across the borough over a five year period between 2025 and 2030. The charge points and charging bays will be designed to the latest accessibility standards.

Jingle into January with free travel on Chester’s Park & Ride

The Council is banishing the winter blues for visitors to Chester by offering free travel on the city’s Park & Ride service throughout January 2025, thanks to funding from the Department of Transport under its Bus Service Improvement Plan grant. The offer applies to single day tickets purchased on bus from any one of the operational sites at Boughton Heath, Upton or Wrexham Road.

A clothes swap is part of the Big Sustainability Festival

Hoole Green Action Fair - 18 January

Start 2025 as you mean to go on by connecting with sustainable organisations at the first Hoole Green Action Fair. Taking place at Hoole Community Centre, from 10.30am - 4pm, there will be a whole host of eco-friendly activities to get involved in. You could take part in a silent disco litter pick, exchange unwanted Christmas gifts, or pick up a new outfit at the clothes swap stall. There will also be various workshops and stalls hosted by local groups, plus food and drink. Find out more about the free event by clicking on the below link.

Next Climate Emergency Taskforce

The next Climate Emergency Taskforce meeting will be taking place on Thursday, 30 January, between 6pm – 8pm. This will be an online meeting and will focus on community energy and communications. We’re excited to inform you that we have launched the Phase Two Consultation for Frodsham Solar today.

Our Phase Two consultation is running between Thursday 7^th November and Thursday 19^th December 2024. We are asking for written feedback to be provided on or before this date.

As part of this phase of consultation, we are consulting on the Preliminary Environmental Information Report (PEIR), which is available to view via the project website: www.frodshamsolar.co.uk

Our Phase Two Community Consultation Leaflet provides background to Cubico, an overview of our updated proposal and details of how you can get involved in our consultation.

We’re also holding five in-person information events and one online community webinar on the dates listed below. Further details can be found on Page 14 of the consultation leaflet attached.

Share your views on the borough’s plan to tackle the Climate Emergency

A draft of the Council's Climate Emergency Response Plan for 2025 - 2030 is available to view following an initial co-production exercise earlier this year.

The Council is asking people and organisations in west Cheshire to review the plan and provide feedback on the outcomes and actions included, through an online consultation.

This is the second Climate Emergency Response Plan prepared for the borough and will be used as a guide to support west Cheshire to achieve its target to reach net zero by 2045.

You can have your say on all sections of the plan or choose to answer questions and provide feedback on one of the six key theme areas:

Business and industry
Transport
Housing
Energy
Land use and adaptation
Waste and the circular economy

Paper copies of the consultation are available on request and the Council's Climate Change team are hosting a series of drop-in sessions, where you can talk to them about the proposed plan and provide feedback.

Celebrating 30 years of The Mersey Forest

The Mersey Forest is celebrating a milestone anniversary 30 years after the first forest plan was developed for the area. Partners and friends of the forest came together recently at the University of Chester to celebrate the occasion and reflect on how the Mersey Forest partnership has been instrumental in transforming the landscape of Merseyside and Cheshire. Over the last three decades, the area’s Community Forest has planted nearly 10 million trees, created 600km of accessible pathways through 10,000 hectares of thriving habitat, brought in over £150 million of external funding and delivered the award-winning Natural Health Service.

Residents urged to sign up for group solar buying scheme ahead of November deadline

The date for people to join the latest round of Solar Together Cheshire has been extended until Friday, 15 November 2024. Residents and businesses can register for free for the group-buying scheme by providing some simple information about their property. Over 3,300 people have registered so far for the scheme, which provides the option of purchasing solar panels with optional battery storage and EV charge points at a competitive price.

£5 billion investment confirmed for Cheshire and North West industries

The Council has welcomed the news that the government has given a major decarbonisation project in the region the go ahead. The HyNet project will help to unlock the decarbonisation of industry in the area, providing employment opportunities, whilst helping to reduce carbon emissions in the borough. The project will secure £5 billion of private sector capital to enable re-industrialisation of the region and help local companies compete in international low carbon markets.

Minister for Nature visits the area to learn about England's Community Forests work

Minister for Nature visits community forest projects

Mary Creagh MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, who has responsibility for tree planting, forestry and domestic biodiversity, visited several woodland sites in The Mersey Forest when visiting the area recently. The visit, hosted by England’s Community Forests (ECF) and Cheshire West and Chester Council, provided the opportunity to highlight the work of ECF and their partners and see the difference that woodland and access to nature can make to an area and its communities.

ECO4 Flex scheme to help improve inefficient homes

Grant Store have been appointed to help deliver the Council’s ECO4 Flex scheme, which will help to reduce the carbon emissions of some of the borough’s most inefficient homes. The national ECO4 scheme offers insulation and clean-heat technology to eligible homes, helping to reduce energy bills and improve thermal comfort for residents’ health and wellbeing. To be eligible residents must have a low household income or a qualifying health condition and a property Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of Band E, F or G.

Energy efficiency café for landlords

Cheshire West and Chester Council is working with Pure Leapfrog retrofit team, who support landlords to provide clean powered and cosy homes, to put on an energy efficiency session at Garden Social café in the Garden Quarter, Chester. The session, which is taking place on Friday, 1 November between 1pm-3.30pm, will provide landlords with the opportunity to learn about energy efficiency in rental homes, with the option of taking up a free retrofit assessment of their property.

More Council pledges to support local community projects through the Cheshire West Crowd

The Council has handed out more than £71,000 as part of the latest funding round on the Cheshire West Crowd. Projects have been pitching to the Council for funding through the Community Innovation Fund and Climate Change Emergency Fund, with projects including a fruit garden in Little Sutton, an Eco Park in the Neston area and a number of projects looking to install energy saving measures on community buildings. Whilst some projects have hit their crowdfunding targets others are still calling on the support of local communities.

Council asks for views on active travel proposals for Northwich

The Council is asking for people’s views on updated plans for two routes to boost active travel in Northwich town centre. This project aims to create safer and more accessible routes for walking, cycling or wheeling from Northwich railway station to the town centre. A public engagement exercise on the project took place late last year, with the feedback being used to create the detailed designs. Two routes were proposed and the intention is to deliver both. The deadline for responses for both routes is Wednesday, 30 October 2024.

First Chester repair café held

The first ever Chester Repair Café was held in Hoole this month on International Repair Café Day. Organised by Friends of the Earth (Chester and District) the session brought together skilled volunteers who helped residents repair a range of items, breathing new life into household appliances that may have ended up in landfill. Thanks to donations from the public and Cheshire West Crowd, the area’s crowd funding platform, enough funding has been secured to run the Repair Café for 12 months. The next session will take place on Saturday, 16 November
