Staying safe in busy spaces

With Christmas approaching, many people will be carrying more cash, gifts and other valuables while shopping and travelling. Cheshire Constabulary’s Crime Prevention Team shares these tips to help you and your belongings stay safe in busy spaces.
Stay alert and aware of your surroundings
Avoid wearing headphones or becoming distracted by your mobile phone, particularly when walking alone.
Use confident body language
Walk confidently with your head up, stay aware of what is happening around you, and make eye contact where appropriate.
Choose busy, well-lit routes
Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas whenever possible. Travel with others if you can, and choose busy routes covered by CCTV. Be mindful of possible hiding places such as doorways, bushes and parked vehicles.
Vary your routine
Changing your routine occasionally can make it more difficult for someone to observe your regular routes and target you.
Keep valuables secure
- Spread valuables between different pockets or compartments. Avoid keeping phones, wallets or purses in back pockets.
- Keep bags closed and carry them close to your body.
- Consider anti-theft purse or bag security cables to make valuables harder to remove unnoticed.
- Put your bank card away immediately after use. A protective RFID card holder may help prevent unauthorised scanning of contactless cards.
Take care at cash machines
Check your surroundings before using an ATM. Be wary of anyone standing unusually close and look for signs that the machine may have been tampered with. Cover the keypad when entering your PIN, keep your card in sight and stay focused if anyone tries to distract you.
